The Road from being Unfit to Fit: My Weight Loss Story towards Fitness!

I’m back.

Yes. After almost months of being on hiatus, I’m finally back to tell the story of my absence.

You see, 3 months ago I made a decision that I know will change the path that I’m trekking – particularly my travel-ful and adventurous lifestyle. You may have wondered why suddenly I’ve stopped travelling. No more blog stories, Facebook travel posts, status updates, etc.

I’ll admit, I missed it all. But I’ll also have to be honest, that I haven’t regretted anything – and I’m happier to come back fitter and stronger.

Transformation Challenge

Three months ago, I started becoming conscious of the change that I’m witnessing in my body. Obviously all this traveling, eating and unhealthy food choices are already taking their toll on me – making my clothes tighter, my belly bigger, and my Facebook photos uglier to look at.

I’m getting FATTER and FATTER. It’s a reality that I have to face. And I have to say, I don’t like it. Who does right?

So I’ve decided to embark on a new journey, a journey to becoming Fit.

Planet Infinity’s MetamorpheFit Challenge

I made up my mind to enrol in a fitness gym. Luckily I was able to pass by a nearby gym to where I’m staying in Damosa, Davao City – the Planet Infinity Davao Fitness Gym, and they have this transformation challenge that will award a challenger who will lose the most number of fats based on their inbody assessment, that will run for three months.

Pretty much like the Biggest Losers reality TV show that you know.

Instantly I’ve become interested and I decided to join. For one, I love being challenged, and this is something that I think I needed that time. Not only will I lose weight (which is really my goal), but added bonus to that are the perks waiting for you if you’ll win. Definitely something to motivate anyone!

Let the metamorphe.FIT challenge begin…

And so the program started May 3, 2014. A total of 47 athletes joined. Sessions are held during Mondays (8pm), Wednesdays (8pm), and Saturdays (8am).

metamorphe.FIT is Planet Infinity Davao’s FITNESS TRANSFORMATION CHALLENGE that can help EVERYONE transform and perform their best using effective, proper, progressive, safe, and proven methods, pretty much like the workout called ‘CrossFit’, which is gaining popularity in today’s fitness society.

What is metamorphe.FIT?

Primarily, metamorphe.FIT optimizes fitness thru constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity. It is a program developed to offer a full-body workout that combines elements of cardio, weight lifting, gymnastics, core training and more to prepare the body for the unexpected.

The program is comprised of the following phases:

  • Phase 1 (PREP) – 1st 2 weeks emphasis on proper form, proper mobility and stability, simple body weight and low intensity exercises
  • Phase 2 (Intermediate) – 3-6 weeks moderate intensity, more complex movements/workout, emphasis on stamina and speed
  • Phase 3 (Advanced) – 7-12 weeks more equipments, increase load, high intensity, emphasis on strength and power.

The workouts (called WOD ‘Workout Of the Day’) are composed of high-intensity activities so this means one will likely never do the same routine twice in one week and each workout will usually last between 45 minutes to an hour.

For example, a typical metamorphe.FIT workout may look like this:

Sample WOD:

20 Min AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible)
100m Run
2 Burpees
2 Deadlifts 185lb
2 Pull-ups

*AMRAP means that you will do your best to complete as many rounds of this sequence as possible in the time allotted; in this case 20 minutes.

What makes metamorphe.FIT a different kind of workout?

You see metamorphe.FIT isn’t just about working out or your typical ‘going to they gym exercises’. I admit I used to go to the gym before but after months of doing the same program over and over again, need to say doing it ‘alone’, can make it so routinary that you’ll end up getting tired and eventually will lead you to quit.

But metamorphe.FIT is different. It’s like you are working out with company, people who’ll eventually become your friends and who’ll support you meet your fitness goals.

There is a community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together. In fact, the communal aspect of it is a key component of why it’s so effective – and FUN!

As you see, this workout is for all ages. You’ll be amazed and inspired to see different people across all walks of life, of different ages getting together and working hard to grow, to change, to evolve, to be better than they were before.

Take the case of Ms. Mimi Castillo, one fellow athlete that I admired the most. At 54 years old she was still able to maintain a body as fit as this and do all the prescribed WODs just like any 25+ years person.

metamorphe.FIT Games: the Battle for the Fittest Man and Fittest Woman

Then at the end of the program, after 3 months of training, on August 9, 2014 – MetamorpheFit Season 2 will end with the most awaited metamorphe.FIT Games. Pretty much similar to the recently concluded Reebok CrossFit Games 2014.

The games started at 6pm and unexpectedly lasted until 12midnight – 6 hours of gruelling exercises, endurance, fatigue, hunger, muscle pain, exhaustion. They say this is the best time to know how fit you truly are, to determine who in the end will never give up.

In the end, it’s only a battle between you and yourself. I am glad I was able to surpass, endure, and overcome it all.

Being the 2014 Fittest Woman in the ‘Planet (pretty immense than the Fittest Woman on Earth eh?, haha! just kidding, I mean ‘Planet’ Infinity), I was really thankful for everyone who supported me all throughout my training, the coaches, fellow MFITters, and to God for giving me the strength and keeping all of us safe during the games.

Now I’m humbled to say that I have met my goal, losing 28lbs of fat in a span of 3 months – from being Unfit to Fit – with extra privileges. The prizes are just bonuses, being fit and getting back in shape is the most coveted reward you could ever give yourself, and I am glad I just did.

‘Luck is not found, but made by those who are determined enough.’

Looking back, 3 months ago I’m more than thankful for the day that I made the decision to try and join this challenge. As they say, ‘Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.
