Fun Things To Do In European Cities

Europe is a big place, and its limitless possibilities can be somewhat dizzying if you’re planning a trip. Having some general things to look for can help focus your trip to the continent and give you a direction, though, which is why we wrote up this little guide.

From historic tours to nightlife ideas, these are some of the most entertaining things you can find to do in most major European cities.

Exploring Museums

Different vacations have different priorities.

If you’re in a European city, for instance, chances are you’re not just bumming on the beach (though there are some fantastic places to soak up the sun!). And while they may seem dull to some who prefer a faster pace, museums often end up being a priority.

The museums in major European cities are rather spectacular, and contain art and artifacts you won’t find anywhere else. Seeing them in person, if you have even the slightest appreciation for such things, takes your breath away.

The Mona Lisa at the Louvre, the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum in London, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel at Vatican City (which, one could argue, is one giant museum) are just some examples of the impressive relics from history that are entirely worth your time on a European vacation.

Make it a priority to set foot in these famous houses of history.

Touring Old Buildings

Some of the most ancient places in western history are still standing in Europe, and are absolute musts for people traveling and looking for things to do.

Connecting with some of the oldest and most spectacular places on the continent makes you feel a sense of awe that you can’t really get anywhere else (even in a great museum).

We might suggest a few highlights like Stonehenge in England (even if it’s not technically a building), the Colosseum in Rome, or the Parthenon in Greece. But the truth is that even beyond these remarkable monuments to the history of civilization, there are all sorts of wondrous historical sites littered around Europe.

Checking Out Live Casinos

Getting a sense of history and culture is a wonderful part of traveling to Europe, but you’ll want to seek out some fun too!

In this regard, it’s always good to find good nightlife, and in many European cities that include casinos. The UK and Ireland put out a lot of online casino games, to the point that digital slots and poker rooms comprise Europe’s main association with casino entertainment.

Start your meal off with drinks at a pub you want to see; follow it with an entree at a noteworthy restaurant; and relax with coffee and dessert at a third location that captures your interest.

If you follow this method, you’ll be able to try out more fantastic eateries than if you only visit one at every meal. For example, if you’re in Prague, try drinks at the famous Hemingway Bar, before moving on to Spices for dinner and the Eska bakery for coffee and dessert. It might sound a little tedious, but it’s actually a ton of fun.

Mt. Kalatungan – Mt. Wiji Traverse | 5th Highest Mountain in the Philippines

Popular for being the fifth highest mountain peak in the Philippines, Mount Kalatungan has been tagged by many climbers as a mountain that is “difficult to climb”. This mountain range in Mindanao stretches in areas of Valencia, Maramag, Talakag and Pangantucan, Bukidnon.

A mountain that stands 2,907 MASL, it is no surprise that only the toughest take the challenge.

Mt Kalatungan is not only seen as majestic because of its credentials but its mossy forest has also made an impact on mountaineers. The diversity within the forest is simply an enchanting experience.

Last October 4-6, 2019 I had the privileged to join a climb to Kalatungan mountain range with my friends, a pack we call ‘burikatkats’ 😀

It had been a long time plan and after previous cancellations, finally it happened. So let me share with you our hiking adventure.

How fascinating it was to discover how capable we are in doing things that we thought we cannot do. Conquering the 5th highest mountains in the Philippines is a self-achievement for me considering this was my first major climb.

So here goes our adventure…

Day 1: Preparation

2:00 AM – Departure time from Davao.
5:30 AM -Arrival at Maramag to have breakfast. We then proceeded to Pangantukan for our registration. The registration went like a breeze, no complications. There is also a mandatory climb permit you have to get, a waiver signed, and a quick orientation from the Tourism office before you start your trek.
7:30 AM – An 8km travel from Pangantukan to Mendez. Another registration was done at the barangay hall and it is there that we would need to present our climb permit.

Tribal Ceremonies

Prior to every Mount Kalatungan climb, hikers will be required to offer a live chicken or a similar offering. This will be used for tribal prayers & ritual by the tribe leader to ask the fairies & mountain guardians to guide the hikers on their journey, as locals consider Kalatungan as a holy mountain.

Quick Trivia: Do you know why the mountain is named “Kalatungan”?

Here’s an interesting story about Kalatungan’s name and etymology.

Bukidnon legend has it that during the primeval Great Flood, only the Kitanglad peak remained above the waters – and therein grew a stalk of lemon grass (tanglad) hence the name of the mountain. But the Talaandig tribes of Brgy. Miarayon [trailhead of the Kalatungan trail] clarifies that in fact, the Kalatungan peak too, stood above sea level. And whereas plant life survived in Kitanglad, animal life took a stand in Kalatungan’s summit, where praying mantis eggs were found. Hence, Kalatungan became the mountain’s name, meaning “praying mantis eggs” in the native tongues.

This and more tales are just a part of the cultural component of the trip, and it is always encouraged of climbers to take interest in the tribe’s ceremonies and folkways.

Day 1: Start of Trek – View Deck

9:00 AM – We started our trek, seeing some of the locals with their welcoming smiles as we passed through. Some kids are even cheering us on – only to find out that they are doing this to ask for trail foods (candies & chocolates mostly) from us. haha!

2:00 PM – After 4-5 hours of hiking to mostly ascending trails, we finally arrived at the viewing deck which also had a spectacular view. There was a house built for climbers and it is where we’ll be spending our first night.

Plus since we are the only climbers during that time, we own the entire place to ourselves!

Plenty of time to rest, relax & simply commune with nature!

Day 2 – Kalatungan Summit – Bamboo Camp

We were supposed to break camp & leave at 3am but because it was still raining heavily, we waited for another hour.

4:00 AM – ETD from View Deck
7:30 AM – Finally we reached Buko-buko sa Anay (Muleta falls view deck)

We got lucky because even if it rained so much the previous night, the moment we arrive THERE WAS A CLEARING and you can see Muleta falls! Yay!

After some photo ops & eating our packed breakfast, we prepared again to continue our journey to the summit.

Then we entered the mossy forest, which was quite interesting.

And there we had lots of photo ops again! haha!

10:30 AM – We reached the junction, the last stop before reaching the summit.
**You can leave your bags here at the junction – climb the summit – then just come back for it before heading to the campsite for the night.

There was also a water source here.

12:00 PM – finally.. we reached the summit of Mt Kalatungan!

There was not much view here so we just made the most of the scenery. The weather’s a bit foggy – but overall very lovely.

An Unfortunate Accident

On our descent, almost everyone’s on a hurry because dark clouds are coming up at the distance. The trail’s a bit muddy because of the rain the previous night.. I was trailing behind the group – when all of a sudden I slipped & tripped.. hit my lower back (lumbosacral area) hard on a protruding root of a tree..

Damn… it was really painful. Thought I couldn’t stand up.. But luckily I did, though there was that nagging pain – which exacerbates when I bent down, sit, raise my leg, or exert effort on my lower back.

This made my trek slower back to the junction – luckily one of the guides/porters was trailing behind me & “kuya” led me to a shortcut trail that even if I’m the last one leaving already, I still managed to reach the campsite (Bamboo Camp) before some of our friends did.

Upon arriving at the Bamboo Camp, I’m already feeling a bit nauseous, weak & dizzy. Probably the injury added too. I immediately put up my tent and rested almost the entire afternoon.

Caution: It was extremely cold in the Bamboo Camp. Our organizer said that sometimes the temp may even reach 4*C so be prepared!

Make sure to bring your winter outfit! haha.

Day 3 – Trek to Mt. Wiji

3:15 AM – Break camp.
4:00 AM – Breakfast
6:00 AM – Start of trek to Mt Wiji

The view ascending Mt Wiji was just amazing! With the cold clouds blowing along the open trail, it’s just perfect!

7:00 AM – ETA peak of Mt. Wiji.

Lo and behold, another clearing!. It was truly a beautiful sight to see! Plenty of sea of clouds!

What is even more amazing because at the peak of Mt Wiji, you’ll see a lot of popular mountains in different directions: Mt. Apo – Mt. Matutum (hello to my hometown!), Kitanglad Range and Mt. Piayapayungan.

Because of the beautiful view, what it would be such a waste if we didn’t take this opportunity to take as many photos as we can, and we did haha!

9:00am- Start descent to Mendis.

4:30 PM – After trekking for 8km, we finally, FINALLY arrived back at Brgy Mendis.

Hello sa mga masasakit ang balakang, tuhod at katawan! haha!

And this marks the end of our trek. Boy was it beautiful!

Here are some travel tips:

It is best to contact the Tourism Office of Pangantucan BEFORE your actual climb dates as there is a limit of climbers allowed per day.
No need to worry for mountain guides and porters, it will be organized for you.
DO NOT FORGET to bring Chicken for the tribal ritual in the area. This is mandatory and needs to be given to the tribal chieftain.

To make your climb easier & hassle free, you may contact SAKA TA BAI for their tour package (which we did avail! Ang bait pa ng organizer!)

This is a major climb, so be prepare.. It is advisable that beginners should have 3 days and 2 nights trekking trip for these two mountains. It is a long tip that has difficult trails and limited water sources; one MUST not only be physically prepared but also mentally prepared for this.

Like everything in life, nothing comes easy. Just like how trekking these two mountains wasn’t a walk on the park. But like everything else in life, hard work and patience surely pays off.

And when you get to see the view, you’ll just smile and say, “it was definitely worth it!”

Gigantes Islands, Iloilo Travel Guide: Tour, Itinerary, & Budget

Gigantes Islands has always been one of my dream destinations.

The Gigantes Group of Islands, famously called Islas de Gigantes or “Islands of Giants” are a remote group of islands in the northern part of Iloilo in the Philippines that include around 10 islands from the 2 big islands; Gigantes Norte and Gigantes Sur, and other amazing islets; from the Cabugao Gamay, Pulupandan, Bantigue Sandbar, and the Antonia Beach.

However because of its remote location, the Gigantes Islands in Iloilo is difficult to reach than a lot of traditional tourist destinations in the Philippines. Still, countless travelers manage to visit Isla Gigantes each year.

Thankfully, Las Islas Travel and Tours made my trip easy and hassle-free to visit Carles Iloilo and explore the beautiful islands of Islas de Gigantes.

How to Go to Gigantes Islands

The towns of Carles and Estancia are the main jump-off points, which can be gotten to by land from all significant transport centers in Panay Island including Iloilo, Roxas City, as well as Boracay.

*For this solo trip of mine, I chose to start my Isla Gigantes tour from Carles, Iloilo.

Travel Tip: it’s okay to come from Iloilo City and travel to Carles Port early in the morning to catch the tour which normally starts at 8AM just like what I did. I spent the night in Iloilo City after an evening flight from Davao, then took an early van bound to Carles at 5AM. Travel was swift and hassle free that we arrived in Bancal Port, Carles a little past 7AM.

How to Go to Carles, Iloilo

From Iloilo City

Ride a bus bound to Carles via Ceres Bus Terminal, located in Tagbak Terminal.
Ride a Van or Bus bound for Carles and ask the driver to drop you at Bancal Port.
**Or you can coordinate with Las Islas Travel and Tours for a van sharing that could pick you up in Iloilo from your hotel or accommodation (much cheaper option especially if you’re a solo or couple traveler!)

From Boracay / Malay, Aklan

Now if you’re in Boracay, and wanted to do a trip in Gigantes Islands in Carles, there are plenty of van bound to Roxas City.

From Roxas City

Another option is that before you reach the Roxas Airport, you may alight at Lawaan Ceres Transport Terminal and then take the bus going to Estancia and then get off at Balasan where you can now ride a tricycle to Carles.

How to Get to Gigantes Islands

From Bancal Fish port

If you’re heading to Islas de Gigantes, the popular starting point would be at the Bancal Port in Carles. Before you ride the boat, make sure to pay the environmental fee at the tourism office. Travel time from Bancal to Gigantes Islands is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

Take note that the boat only runs once daily from Bancal to Gigantes Norte Island. It departs Bancal Port at 10 AM and leaves the Island at 2 PM, so we suggest you come at the port early.

Fortunately, those who are availing the tour packages are served special trips by the tour operators at their agreed scheduled time.

What to do in Gigantes Islands?

There are a lot of activities you can do in the island, such as strolling around the coastline, do some island hopping, seeing the old lighthouse as well as to have an outstanding 360 scenic sight of the sea. You can also explore some caves, snorkeling, as well as spelunking too!

Isla Gigantes Island Hopping

A visit to Gigantes is not complete without taking an island hopping tour. Including traveling time, you must allot a minimum of a whole day to check out all the primary sites. Package rates for island-hopping scenic tours differ depending upon the trip operator, sort of boat used, and also the number of passengers in the trip, with bigger groups taking advantage of more affordable rates. Cabugao Gamay Island

This island is just one of the most photographed islands of the Gigantes Group of Islands.

Cabugao Gamay provides a spectacular view of two sides of the coastline visible from a sight deck constructed in addition to rock developments.

If you want your photo taken with the island’s bird-eye view, you can head over at its view deck.

I actually wished I had visited years ago when the view point was only reachable by climbing on the rocks. However to deal with the increase of tourists, the view point is now reachable by a concrete stairway with wooden handrails. Entrance fee: P50 per head

Pulo Pandan Island

This is the last island we visited before our Gigantes Islands day tour ended. This tiny islet with one tree is considered a resting place of fishermen who go out to sea.

They said right here at Pulo Pandan or Pulupandan, one can get a remarkable view of the sunset.

Where / What to Eat in Gigantes Islands

There are various carinderias or you can buy fresh seafood from the public market. Most island-hopping package tours also include a seafood buffet lunch as part of their offerings just like we had in Las Islas.

Where to Stay in Gigantes Islands:

Rustic resorts can be found in Gigantes Norte Island, the main village where most residents live. Most offer basic accommodations catering to budget-conscious travelers. It’s also possible to camp out in tents at Antonia Beach and Bantigue Island, though it is not really encouraged during peak season because of water scarcity in the island.

Take note that there is no public water line that runs in the islands and fresh water for bathing and personal needs have to be brought in by barrels and containers from the mainland or from island springs and deep wells.

Camping fees usually cost P200/pax for those staying in tents. Electric power is also limited on Gigantes Norte Island and runs at scheduled hours and may be cut-off at night. Some resorts may have generators.

Gigantes Islands Travel Budget

Here, we listed some estimated budget for your Islas de Gigantes tour.

Transportation

From Iloilo to Gigantes, van fare (including pick up from hotel) would cost 270 pesos per pax.
The boat ride from Bancal Port going to Gigantes Norte public boat, plus the environmental fee is for 75 pesos per head. A discounted rate of 60 Pesos is available for Students, PWD’s and Senior Citizens (with ID).

Small Boat – P3,500 good for 1-10 persons
Medium Boat – P5,000 good for 11-15 persons
Big Boat – P6,000 good for 16-30 persons

Tours and Fees

If you are getting your own boat for the Isla Gigantes tour, you also need to pay your tour guide for 500 pesos. Remember to bring some cash with you too, as there is no ATM machines near the área.
Shower areas – for guests on a day tour, they have shower rooms for you to change into dry clothes available in Bancal port for a 20php fee.

Well, for Frances Mayes (Diane Lane), that is exactly what happens. While on a 10-day trip to Tuscany, Frances impulsively purchases an abandoned villa. This movie is filled with humor, romance, and plenty of gorgeous vistas of Tuscany. This movie will have you packing your bags for Italy.

The Bucket List

An all time best travel movie with a message to live life to the fullest, the Bucket List is a tearjerker, and more importantly, a heart-warming film that will inspire you to do all the things that you want to do before you kick the bucket, including traveling. To me, the film also reminds us that life is too short, and we should enjoy it to the fullest.

This travel movie talks of a young woman who goes on a 1,700-mile trek across the deserts of West Australia with four camels and her faithful dog. More amazing is that it is a travel film based on a true story.

Another classic movie about traveling set in Vietnam! The heroes are a Vietnamese man and a French school young lady, who start a relationship together in Saigon. It’s an exquisite, air film, despite the fact that it’s more character-centered than anything.

If you want another Meryl Streep travel film that is often considered one of the best travel movies, you should try Out of Africa. Ok, I know it’s an old one, but it definitely deserves a place in the all time favourite travel movies list. Filmed in Kenya and the UK, this classic that has won 7 Oscars and countless other prizes will definitely get you dreaming of Africa. It’s one of those movies that you can watch again and again.

The Hundred Foot Journey (2014)

Here’s another one of my all time best favorite travel movie, the Hundred-Foot Journey is a feel-good movie that takes place in what just might be the most picturesque village in all of France with scenic locations of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and the equally enthralling shots of Indian and French cuisine. This travel movie will show you that indeed “Life has its own flavor.”

Wild (2014)

Where this Travel Movie Takes you: Pacific Northwest in the U.S

Based on a true story of a young lady who sets on a voyage of over a thousand miles with a couple of sick fitting hiking boots and a huge backpack planning to recuperate after the passing of her mom. Wild is full of beautiful scenes throughout the Pacific Northwest in the U.S, a travel movie that will surely make you want to travel!

In Bruges (2008)

Where this Travel Movie Takes you: Belgium

This is awesome in light of the fact that many people never have motivation to travel to Bruges, despite the fact that it’s an amazing and noteworthy city. As Brendan Gleeson took in the history and read the guidebooks admiring the city, Colin Farrell just kept talking about how much he hated Bruges, which made me love it more.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Where this Travel Movie Takes you: Iceland, Himalaya and Afghanistan

This is a carefree story for a travel movie night with friends. This movie about traveling includes not your ordinary travel destinations. Many of the scenes (even the ones from Himalaya and Afghanistan) are shot in Iceland. The incredible undertakings of Walter Mitty will leave you yearning for an extraordinary adventure of your own.

On The Road (2012)

Where this Travel Movie Takes you: United States

A youthful author with two companions sets off by stolen autos visiting the United States looking for freedom and insane undertakings. Difficulty, misfortune, and liberality drive the lust to wander in this travel film adaption of the original Kerouac novel. As with all movies about travel, it’ll never satisfy everyone. But it does expose how a life where you need to travel is … just … messy sometimes.

Up in the Air (2009)

George Clooney stars as Ryan, organizations contract him to fly all across the country to inform strangers they’ve lost their job. An obsessive frequent flyer, he’s going to achieve his objective of getting a million miles. This travel movie gives you a glance into corporate America and the domestic airports that shuttle workers around the country is in. An emotionally deft movie about travel that will give you one hilarious look at life on the road.

The Beach (2000)

Where this Travel Movie Takes you: Thailand

This travel movie follows Leonardo DiCaprio (before he had a dadbod :D) in the gorgeous crystal clear waters of Ko Phi Phi Lee, Thailand. Those beaches, those parties, those people. It appeared to be superb. Backpackers in Asia are always reading the book, and the travel film plays in all the guesthouses. It says something about our hopes for the road: we want to find our own idyllic, romantic paradise. The one we all think won’t be destroyed, but will. It is a great reflection on the hopes and realities of travel.

Midnight in Paris (2011)

There have been a lot of travel movies shot in Paris, however not very many can nail it like Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. Owen Wilson strolling around Paris moves to another world. In the same way as other travelers in the City of Light, he backtracks the means of Parisian creatives past, drinking coffee in the same places they once did—until, late one night, an auto of these extremely symbols shows up, clearing him back so as to a night of celebration among the literati of the 1920s. Sure it’s time travel, but past or present, Paris always enchants.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Lovely, cute, inappropriate and hilarious, Little Miss Sunshine tells the story of a dysfunctional family that went on an unusually blissful and funny road trip to California, to fulfill the dream of their sweet little girl.

The Rum Diary (2011)

This movie about travel tells the increasingly unhinged story of journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) as he travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico. It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)

Confronting widowhood, and the realities of aging, a group of British retirees travel to India to move in what they thought is a newly restored hotel. And find it to be not exactly what they expected, they get a great cultural lesson and immersion experience. It just goes to show you what expectations can do, and how much fun you can have when you have a great group of people.

The book-turned-travel film motion picture Eat Pray Love, since its release has been moving people to travel, and look for a life or profession outside the huge humming cities. Yet another travel movie of the genuine story and diary by Liz Gilbert, Julia Roberts plays her and outwardly takes us through her transformational journey to self-disclosure through eating in Italy, praying in India and loving in Bali. A travel movie for all senses.
