Insightful Dialogue In The Dark Experience

Sight is what we see with our eyes, Insight is what we gain without seeing.

Months before our trip to Hong Kong, as I was making the travel itinerary, I’ve come across a new attraction at TripAdvisor.com. As a matter of fact, it’s not just ‘your ordinary’ destination for it is rated as the #1 among all must dos in HK.  This instantly drove me to include it in our itinerary. Immediately I booked tickets for it online (FYI there are only 2 English Tours in a day that’s why advance booking is required, and each tour group has a limit of 8 people, so better hurry up if you have plans!)

So what is this that I’m talking about? No other than the Dialogue in the Dark experience.

Dialogue In The Dark Review And Insights

Dialogue in the Dark (“DiD”) is a different visit from ordinary Hong Kong tourist spot. In complete darkness, a visually impaired staff will guide you to explore a specially constructed exhibition.

Inside the exhibition, there are five different settings: a park, a market, on the street, a movie theatre and a café. Each setting has unique sounds, smells, textures and even tastes; without eyesight, you will have to depend on your other senses to discover yourself.

The visually-impaired english guide who accompanied us through the dark for one hour was a middle-aged woman named Susan. After the tour, she even told us the story of her life and on how she got blind after a certain health condition of her while she was still young.  Truly an inspiring one!

In the dark, the blind becomes sighted while the sighted are led by the blind – your roles will be reversed. You will learn to appreciate the world without eyesight – and find out that there is still so much beauty to be found without light.

How to Get To Dialogue in the Dark

MTR to Mei Foo station – Exit C1. then cross the street and turn right. Walk 50 meters and take your next left. Along the road you will see the public library on your right, and you will pass a swimming pool on your left. Pass underneath the bridge, and enter the shopping mall via escalators. (2escalators)

Address: Shop No. 215, 2/F, The Household Centre, Nob Hill, 8 King Lai Path, Mei Foo, Kowloon .

*Bring HK$10-20 in coins as you will be needing this inside the exhibit.

The exhibition is a unique journey through the dark that is not only fun and exciting, but will also alter your perception towards visually impaired people and the way you use your other senses in daily life.

This 3-day escape to the land of fragrant harbour happened last June 24-26, 2012. Here is a series of posts on our trip to one of Asia’s World Class City, Hong Kong. Discover the places we’ve been to, the people we met, the food we tasted and the experience we gained in this remarkable escapade.
